Family/Individual Preparedness

The Modoc County Public Health Disaster Services program recommends each family/individual has a Disaster Plan made up, including a Disaster Kit.  Here are some tips to get you started, but you can also contact the Modoc County Public Health if you have anymore questions regarding Disaster Preparedness.
Remember, when a disaster strikes, the first 72 is up to you!

Disaster Preparedness

  • Create a Family Emergency Plan (see Tips in next column).
  • Meet with household members and discuss the dangers of fire, severe weather, earthquakes, and other potential emergencies.
  • Practice the plan frequently.
  • Establish a meeting place in case members of the family are separated during an event (one near your home and one outside your neighborhood in case you cannot return home).
  • Establish a call-in number with a friend or neighbor out-of-state in case interstate communications are not accessible.
  • Make arrangements for pets as animals will not be allowed in public shelters.
  • Prepare a disaster supplies kit:
    • Supply of water (one gallon per person per day; have at least 3 day's worth per person).  Store in sealed, unbreakable containers.  Identify the storage date and replace every six months.
    • Supply of non-perishable packaged or canned food and a non-electric can opener.
    • A change of clothing, rain gear, and sturdy shoes.
    • Blankets and/or sleeping bags.
    • First aid kit and a current list of prescription medications taken by each family member including dose, time, etc.
    • Copy of eyewear prescription for each family member.
    • Battery-powered radio, flashlight, and plenty of extra batteries.
    • Extra cash.
    • Extra set of car keys.
    • List of family physicians with addresses and phone numbers.
    • List of important family information; the style and serial number of medical devices, such as pacemakers.
    • Special care items for infants, elderly, or disabled family members.
