The elderly, the very young, and people with mental illness and chronic diseases are at the highest risk for heat-related problems. If your heart starts to pound, if you experience difficulty breathing, become lightheaded, confused, weak, or faint, STOP all activity; get to cool area or shade and rest. Stay indoors if at all possibleAn air-conditioned area is best, but a cool shower or bath can help. Electric fans may not prevent heat-related illness when temperatures reach high 90s. Use a Buddy-SystemA person may not realize they are experiencing a problem. Co-workers should monitor each other. Persons 65 years of age or older should be checked on at least twice a day.
